"As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you."  Psalm 42:1

A Deep Well

I live in the West, which has been experiencing a bad drought. All the communities around us have strict watering rules for lawns and gardens. There is no watering allowed between 9am -5pm, along with many other restrictions. Some of the wells in the outlying areas have begun to go so dry, so people have to truck water from other places. People are concerned because without water there is no life.

The people in biblical times were more aware than we are of the value of water. Many of them were desert nomads, who could only pitch their tents where there was abundant water for them and their animals. People in cities dug deep wells to share. When precious water ran out in the cities, it had to be carried in and sold in clay pots. That's one reason Jesus talked about so much water. People understood it was life-giving.

While climbing in the mountains, you often see a lone tree or shrub, growing out of a rock or cliff. It looks strange, as though it is growing out of barren hardness. But the roots are indescribably strong, going deep, into underground streams.

Women in exercise classes routinely drink water from bottles they carry with them because their bodies crave water to function well. Our bodies are more than 90 per cent water. Without water, we begin to collapse. Once we understand the importance of water we begin to comprehend the profound necessity of pausing and filling up regularly from the Spring of Life.

The story of Mary and Martha illustrates this, Martha invited Jesus to her home and was preparing a fancy meal but her sister Mary paused. She sat at Jesus' feet and listened to Him. She filled up her spirit with Living Water. Jesus said Mary had chosen to do the only thing that was really necessary.

Make a regular habit of spending time just enjoying Jesus and the Father. Maybe its taking a prayer walk, praying with a friend, quiet time reading a fresh translation of the Bible, or extended private time in prayer and mediation. Whatever your soul needs, don't go too long without Him. Take action - without water, there is no life.
