I live in the West, which has been experiencing a bad drought. All the communities around us have strict watering rules for lawns and gardens. There is no watering allowed between 9am -5pm, along with many other restrictions. Some of the wells in the outlying areas have begun to go so dry, so people have to truck water from other places. People are concerned because without water there is no life.
The people in biblical times were more aware than we are of the value of water. Many of them were desert nomads, who could only pitch their tents where there was abundant water for them and their animals. People in cities dug deep wells to share. When precious water ran out in the cities, it had to be carried in and sold in clay pots. That's one reason Jesus talked about so much water. People understood it was life-giving.
While climbing in the mountains, you often see a lone tree or shrub, growing out of a rock or cliff. It looks strange, as though it is growing out of barren hardness. But the roots are indescribably strong, going deep, into underground streams.
